Hornets Sweep First Day of Marymount Quad

ARLINGTON, Va.- The Shenandoah University women's volleyball team earned a pair of wins against  Marymount University and Nazareth University in two 3-1 victories on Friday afternoon at the Marymount Quad.

The Hornets (3-3) were led by Hannah Hylton, who recorded 29 kills between the two matches versus the Saints (1-3) and the Golden Flyers (0-4). Amanda Ingrassia delivered 40 assists in the two wins.

MARYMOUNT RECAP

The afternoon started with the Hornets taking a 5-2 lead in the first set, thanks to kills from Amber Shifflett, Ava Panullo, and Ashlynn Spence. The Hornets maintained their lead until Marymount brought it to within one at 15-14 and 17-16.

Shenandoah gained full control of the first set, 20-16, with two Saints attack errors and consecutive kills from Hylton, later winning the set, 25-19, on a 4-0 run.

The second set began with the team's trading points before SU once again took a 5-2 lead. The Hornets maintained the lead for the entire set, winning 25-19, with Vanessa Rodriguez gaining eight assists in the process.

Marymount controlled the third set, winning 25-15, to gain a point in the match. However, the Hornets were able to rebound in the fourth and close out the match, 3-1. SU had 14 kills in the final frame, with over half coming off the hands of Hylton.

NAZARETH RECAP

Shenandoah lost the first set, after tying it at 16, but rallied to win the next three frames, 25-20, 25-15, 25-17.

The teams were tied at five in the early portion of the second set, but the Hornets were able to get the lead up to five on back-to-back service aces by Ingrassia. Nazareth came right back and tied the set once again, 13-13. However, the tie didn't last as Shenandaoh took full advantage on a 9-1 run with four kills by Alana Washington. Susan Smith provided two assists in the final moments of the frame, helping SU tie the match at one.

In the third, Shenandoah prevented Nazareth from holding the lead, with the Golden Flyers committing 13 errors, nine of which came on attack attempts. The Hornets held an 11-point advantage in the set, their largest of the match.

Nazareth jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the fourth, but that was quickly erased as SU gained the lead, 4-3, with an ace from Autumn Stroop and a kill by Shifflett. A solo block by Spence helped the Hornets gain a five-point lead, which then grew to six as Shenandoah led 17-11. Shenandoah kept Nazareth at distance, only letting them come within four for the remainder of the match.
