Men's Volleyball Wins First Ever Match at Debut Tri-Match

Virginia Beach, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's volleyball team won its first-ever match in its debut tri-match, defeating Regent University 3-0 in the latter half of a split also featuring Randolph College on Sunday afternoon.

The Hornets (1-1, 0-1 ODAC) dropped the opening match 3-0 to the WildCats (1-0, 1-0) but rebounded to defeat the Royals (0-1) 25-21, 25-20, 25-21. The win not only marked the program's first-ever win, but it also signaled the first career win of head coach Travis Abele.

RANDOLPH RECAP

Simon Bellenbaum put the Hornets on the board for the first-time ever with the program's first block. Bellenbaum provided another block in the opening set as the WildCats led 6-2 early. Finnegan Martin gave the Hornets their first kill off an assist from Turner Hare despite Randolph winning the set, 25-11.

Kills by Kailen Dmitruk and Martin, each assisted by Hare, helped the Hornets tie the middle set at three. Randolph led the entire way, with SU tying the frame six more times, with the final tie at 14 points. The WildCats closed out the set on an 11-4 run.

In the third, Randolph had three 3-0 runs, which helped them win the match as they held the Hornets from holding the lead.

Dmitruk led the Hornets with seven kills and Hare had a team-high 18 assists. Hare also provided the lone service ace of the match for SU.

REGENT RECAP

Shenandoah trailed 9-2 in the first set but was able to grab its first-ever lead off a block from Alex Schoenen, grabbing a 15-14 advantage. After Regent reclaimed the lead, the Hornets rallied and claimed a 23-19 lead off a 5-0 run, with two kills from Jahmai-Kaream Maurice. Maurice then gave SU set-point prior to Dmitruk winning the set with a kill, assisted by Hare.

Shenandoah scored the first two points of the second set, but it was Regent who saw a 12-10 lead in the middle of the frame after each team went on a 5-0 run. The Royals maintained the lead until an attack error pushed SU out in front, 17-16. The Hornets wrapped up the set with five more kills, including a pair from Dmitruk and Martin.

Regent controlled the third set early, but SU grabbed momentum off an 8-1 run for a 15-11 lead. Regent rallied to tie the set at 17, but a kill by Martin started a 6-0 run for SU that put them up 23-17. Maurice added another kill for SU, but it was Bellenbaum who provided the final kill, giving Shenandoah their first-ever win.

Hare had 30 assists for the Hornets, for a total of 48 throughout the tri-match. Of the 30 assists, Dmitruk and Maurice were at the opposite end of 20 of them, as the duo each had 10 kills. Defensively, Dmitruk led the way with 14 digs, while Jordan Griffin and Martin added 12 and 10, respectively.
