Men's Basketball Earns First ODAC Win of the Season

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team defeated Eastern Mennonite University at home on Wednesday night, 65-61, for the program's first ODAC win of the season.

Leading by one, Ellis Wright made a three-pointer from the top of the key to give the Hornets (8-8, 1-6 ODAC) the cushion needed to defeat the Royals (5-11, 2-5).

RECAP

The Royals missed their first eight shots of the evening, with the Hornets getting two steals and a pair of blocks to help them gain a 10-2 lead. An Isaiah Lee three-pointer kept the lead at eight for SU, 19-11, with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first.

The Hornets' lead quickly vanished as the Royals took a 28-22 lead late in the first behind a 14-0 run. Joseph Baldwin added three points for SU to cut the SU deficit down to three by halftime.

Ellis Wright scored six straight points early in the second half, helping the Hornets recapture the advantage, 33-28. Over the next few minutes, the teams traded points until EMU tied the game at 41.

At the midway point of the second half, Dorian Davis ignited the Hornets with a dunk and chase down block to extend their lead out to eight. EMU scored the next four points before Matthew Simmons contributed four points to grow the lead back out to eight.

Eastern Mennonite once again rallied back and took a one-point lead with 1:34 left, thanks to a three-pointer. Immediately after the Royals took the lead, John Allen laid down a dunk to flip the score back in the Hornets' favor.

With less than 20 seconds remaining and the Hornets up by one, Davis drove into the paint and kicked the ball out to Wright, who knocked down a three-pointer to give Shenandoah a 63-59 lead. EMU cut the SU lead to two, but free throws by Samuel Daily sealed the win for the Hornets.

Wright, Davis, and Allen all found themselves with at least 10 points, with Davis adding 10 rebounds for a double-double. Simmons dished out seven assists and had three steals, both team highs.

UP NEXT

The Hornets travel down to Guilford College for a 4 p.m. ODAC showdown on Friday. The contest was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was moved due to the inclement weather.
