Men's Volleyball Defeated Twice at VWU Invite

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's volleyball team was swept on Friday at the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational on Friday, losing to the hosts 3-0 to begin the day and falling 3-1 versus Wisconsin Lutheran College.

The Hornets (1-4, 0-3 ODAC) won the first set in their second match, after being defeated by the Marlins (1-1, 1-0)  in conference play, but dropped the next three sets to the Warriors (2-0).

VWU RECAP

The Marlins controlled the first set with an 11-1 lead. Finnegan Martin led a 5-1 run for the Hornets with two kills to cut their deficit in half, 14-7. Later in the set, down 23-13, SU went on a 4-0 run behind two kills by Kailen Dmitruk, but the Marlins won the next two rallies, taking the set, 25-17.

Shenandoah opened the middle frame with a 5-3 lead and was able to grow it to a 10-7 advantage. An 11-3 run by the hosts flipped the momentum and gave them a six-point lead. Simon Bellenbaum provided a solo block for SU that brought the set within three points. The teams alternated points on the final seven rallies, giving VWU a 25-21 win.

The Hornets, looking to take a set from the Marlins, had a 6-3 lead in the third, but a 10-1 streak by the Marlins gave them another six-point lead. VWU went on to win the match, capping off the sweep with a 25-14 third-set victory.

Finnegan had a team-high 10 kills, Turner Hare led the team in assists with 14.

WLC RECAP

Shenandoah recovered from an early WLC lead and gained a 17-8 advantage with multiple aces and kills by Dmitruk. Errors by the Warriors and a Kaden Odberg kill helped the Horents hit 21 points and keep the lead. Three more errors by the opposition and an ace by San'Tonio Garrett-Hymon won the set by the Hornets.

The Warriors scored first in the second frame and kept the Hornets from gaining it, despite SU tying the set four times. In the latter half of the set, SU trailed by two, but the Warriors took full control and won 25-19, thanks to a 6-2 run. Since the Warriors were able to tie the match, 1-1, it marked the first time in program history the Hornets would have to face a fourth set.

In the third, Wisconsin Lutheran once again took the lead first, but a Dmitruk kill tied the frame at nine. The kill was in the midst of a 7-1 run for SU that gave them a 13-10 lead. Three kills by Alex Schoenen kept the lead for SU, until WLC rebounded and led 21-18. The Warriors led for the rest of the set, winning 25-23. The tight win in the third helped the Warriors and carried them to a 25-9 victory in the fourth, which won them the match.

Garrett-Hymon and Tanner Ribel had double-digit digs for the Hornets, while Schoenen and Dmitruk led the team in kills.

UP NEXT

The Hornets were originally scheduled for four matches at the VWU Invitational, but due to the inclement weather, SU will miss out on Saturday's action. SU's next match is next Friday at the Randolph-Macon Tri-Match.
