Men's Volleyball Earns a Split at RMC Invitational

ASHLAND, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's volleyball team won its second match in program history in a split on Friday at the Randolph-Macon Invitational, defeating Gallaudet University in the opener, 3-0, before falling to the hosts.

The Hornets (2-5, 0-4 ODAC) held the Bison (0-3) to under 20 points in all three sets, including a 25-11 victory in the middle frame. The Yellow Jackets (5-1, 1-0) fought off the Hornets for a 3-0 victory to close out the evening. Kailen Dmitruk led the Hornets with a combined 22 kills, as Turner Hare collected 18 assists in each match.

GALLAUDET RECAP

The Bison led 10-7 in the first, but a 9-1 run by the Hornets helped them grab a 16-11 advantage. Following a kill by Alex Schoenen, Gallaudet cut the Hornets' lead down to two, 17-15. Shenandoah maintained its lead despite Gallaudet's efforts, ending the set on a 4-0 run, capped off with a service ace.

Just like the first set, Gallaudet led early until a 6-0 stretch by SU gave them control, 12-8. Block assists from Robert Blair and Hare, plus a kill by San'Tonio Garrett-Hymon, extended SU's second set lead, before they closed out the frame on an 11-0 run.

Finnegan Martin gave SU the first point of the third set with a kill, but Gallaudet once again grabbed the early advantage. Three consecutive errors by the Bison handed the lead back to SU, 7-4, with Schoenen and Martin adding on with two more kills. In the middle of the frame, Schoenen provided two more kills in the midst of a 5-0 run that put SU ahead by seven. The seven-point lead was enough for the Hornets to clinch the match as the Bison coughed up five more errors to end the third.

The Hornets had five total blocks in the match, with Dmitruk, Schoenen, Blair, and Hare assisting on multiple blocks.

RMC RECAP

Dmitruk scored the first two SU points in the match, tying the first set at two, before the Yellow Jackets pulled away with a 12-3 run. Randolph-Macon won the opening frame 25-15, after holding the Hornets to no more than two consecutive points at a time.

Another kill by Dmitruk plus four errors by RMC helped the visitors take their first lead of the match, 5-2, in the second. The Yellow Jackets quickly answered to grab a small advantage before Dmitruk and Schoenen each picked up a kill to tie the set at seven. Despite the tie, Randolph-Macon scored next and held the lead for the remainder of the set, winning 25-18.

In the third, RMC led 8-2, but an ace and kill by Schoenen brought SU within three. Just a few rallies later, Dmitruk landed consecutive kills to make it a one-point set, with Hare assisting on both kills. However, another 8-2 run by RMC extended its lead to seven.

Later in the third set, the Yellow Jackets led 21-15 as they looked to close out the match, but the Hornets didn't go away quietly. SU proceeded to go on an 8-1 run, which saw them grab a 23-22 lead late. The SU momentum was stopped there as RMC won the match on a 3-0 run.
