Football Holds on for Win Over Roanoke

WINCHESTER, Va. - Behind 319 offensive yards and three forced turnovers by the defense, the Shenandoah University football program defeated Roanoke College 30-24 on Saturday afternoon at home in an ODAC game.

The Hornets (4-2, 2-1 ODAC) stopped a Maroons (4-2, 1-2) fourth-quarter comeback attempt with a fourth-down stop in the final minute. Jaren Mitchell had two interceptions for the Hornets for the first multi-interception game by a SU player since Matt Conroy '26 in 2024.

RECAP

Jaren Mitchell came up with his first interception of the game on Roanoke's second drive, picking off a pass at the Hornets' 30-yard line and returning it 59 yards. The pick set up a Carson Gallant 25-yard field goal to put SU up 3-0. The Maroons responded late in the first with a touchdown, but missed the extra point, giving the visitors a 6-3 advantage.

Four plays into the second, SU reclaimed the lead with a six-yard touchdown reception by Jackson McFarland from Mekhi Brown.

Later in the second, Maximus Pit-Og forced a fumble, which was recovered by Phoenix Andes-Stowell. The SU offense went on a six-play, 45-yard drive to extend the lead to 17-6 off a passing touchdown from Brown to Caleb Weston from 20 yards out. Roanoke added a field goal before the half ended as SU carried a 17-9 lead into halftime.

The Maroons tied the game midway through the third with a passing touchdown plus the two-point conversion.

Following the Maroons' touchdown, running back Bryce Buchanan broke free for a 37-yard rush, which led to a Brown rushing TD four plays later. Buchanan finished the day with 97 rushing yards on 15 touches.

In the fourth quarter, the Maroons trailed by seven and faced a 4th-and-2 in SU territory. The Maroons went for a pass on fourth down, which found the hands of SU's Mitchell for his second pick of the day. On the ensuing drive, a toe-tap catch by Weston put SU at the Maroons' three-yard line, allowing Will Yoder to pick up a receiving touchdown.

Roanoke scored a touchdown with 5:48 left in the game to make it a one-score game. Then, Roanoke's defense forced a three-and-out, giving the ball back to the visitors the ball back with 3:37 left on the clock.

The Maroons drove down the field and got inside the red zone with under two minutes left. A holding call pushed their offense back, putting them in a passing situation. On a game-deciding fourth down, the Maroons stepped back to pass and looked for a receiver in the end zone but overthrew the pass, sealing the win for the Hornets.

Mekhi Brown finished the game with 180 passing yards and four total touchdowns. Caleb Weston led the team with 71 receiving yards, while Roge't Walker had a team-high six receptions.

Brennan Wallace led the Hornets with 10 tackles, while Maximus Pit-Og had two tackles for loss, and Ryan Apietu had one sack.
