Field Hockey Scores Late in Win at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The No. 22 Shenandoah University field hockey team opened a three-game road stand with a 1-0 ODAC victory on Wednesday night at Bridgewater College.

The Hornets (12-2, 5-1 ODAC) delivered the game-winning goal in the fourth quarter with 10 minutes left, while Cassidy Alexander stopped the Eagles (8-7, 2-3) four times in the shutout win.

RECAP

Kierney Weigle and Ellie Quinn had back-to-back chances at the net in the first four minutes of the game but were stopped by the Eagles to keep it scoreless. Midway through the opening quarter, Bridgewater had its frist real chance of the game but were stopped at the doorstep by Cassidy Alexander.

Alexander made two saves in the second, and defender Natalie Opatovsky made a defensive save to back up her goalie and keep it a deadlock at zero. In the final seconds of the first half Rylin McCloskey put a shot on target for SU, which was saved right before the half ended.

Within a two-minute span in the third quarter, the Hornets' offense ramped up the pressure and fired five consecutive shots on net, which were all stopped by Bridgewater's goalie and defense.

Offense finally prevailed in the final quarter with Weigle and Quinn connecting for the lone goal of the game.

Shenandoah held a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal and an 18-6 lead on overall shots.
