Men's Volleyball Wins in Five Sets on Senior Night

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's volleyball team celebrated its inaugural senior night with its first-ever five-set match, winning 3-2 against NAIA Bluefield University (Va.) on Thursday night.

The Hornets (6-10) clinched the match with three straight points in the fifth set after the Rams (8-8) led by four earlier in the set. Prior to the match, Shenandoah celebrated Tanner Ribel and Jack Lim for senior night.

RECAP

With the first set tied at 18, the Rams went on a 7-2 run to win the frame 25-20 and take the first point of the evening.

Shenandoah fell behind by two early in the second but rebounded with an 8-2 run, grabbing a 12-8 lead. The Rams came within one, but three straight SU kills, including two by Kailen Dmitruk, extended the lead back to four. However, Bluefield tied the set late, 19-19. The Hornets had four kills across their final six points of the set to win 25-23, tying the match at one.

In the third, the teams battled back-and-forth to a 16-16 tie, until kills by Simon Bellenbaum and Dmitruk gave SU a 19-16 advantage. The Hornets pushed its lead to four, before eventually winning the set, 25-22.

An 11-3 lead in the fourth led the Rams to a 25-22 set victory, tying the match and sending it to a decisive fifth set.

In the final frame, the Rams jumped out to an early 7-3 lead. Alex Schoenen provided two kills for the Hornets, helping them cut the deficit to one, but the Rams would lead 8-6 as the teams flipped sides of the court. An attack error by the Rams, plus a Bellenbaum kill, tied the set at eight. The visitors held the lead and had a chance to close out the match with them up 14-13. However, a service error tied the match one final time, before Dmitruk laid down an ace to give SU a one-point lead. Then, off an assist from Ribel, Dmitruk provided the match-winning kill for the Hornets, giving them the 16-14 fifth set win.

Finnegan Martin and Dmitruk matched for the team-high 18 kills, while Schoenen joined them in double figures with 12. Turner Hare added a team-high 25 assists, with Kaden Odberg providing 22.
