Women's Soccer Marches Past Saints in Season Premiere

WINCHESTER, Va. - The 2026-27 season for the entire Shenandoah University athletic department started off with its women's soccer team shutting out Marymount University, 3-0, on Tuesday afternoon in a home non-conference game.

The Hornets (1-0) gathered three goals in the first half of the game and held the Saints (0-1) to a single shot on net for the team's first season-opening shutout since 2023. The teams have played each other to begin the season for the last five years, with SU winning four of the five meetings.

RECAP

Shenandoah wasn't afraid to shoot the ball in the first moments of the new season, registering four shots in the opening 10 minutes, followed by another shot at net in the 12th minute. The Hornets broke through in the 20th minute with 2025 All-Region player McKenna Newcome finding the back of the cage. In her junior year, Newcome is now tied for ninth all-time in career goals for SU.

In the 31st minute, following one of the team's 10 corners, Emily Soos connected with Lauren Duffy for the second goal of the contest. Just over a minute later, SU pushed its lead to three thanks to Kirklyn Wilson's first goal of the season, with assists from Newcome and Elliana Bauer.

Molly Donaldson, the starting goalkeeper for the Hornets, made her lone save of the clean sheet in the 11th minute of the game.

The Hornets put the ball on target three times in the second half, with each attempt saved. However, the Shenandoah defense also kept Marymount from getting off a shot in the final 45 minutes.
