WINCHESTER, Va. — The Mary Washington field hockey team held off a late fourth-quarter rally by Shenandoah University to secure a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Aikens Stadium. With the win, Mary Washington improves to 3-0 on the season, while Shenandoah drops to 3-1.
How It Happened
Mary Washington wasted little time making an impact, capitalizing early in the opening period. At the 5:52 mark, Grayson Scott struck first for the Eagles off an assist from Katie Royle to put Mary Washington ahead 1-0.
Shenandoah responded with relentless pressure in the second period, firing seven shots and earning two penalty corners. However, Mary Washington goalkeeper Tori Winans held firm in net, turning away all four shots on goal during the quarter to maintain the lead heading into halftime.
Coming out of the break, Mary Washington extended its advantage early in the third period. Just under two minutes into the second half (31:27), Mackenzie Proffitt buried an unassisted goal to double the Eagles' lead to 2-0. UMW kept the pressure on throughout the frame, tallying nine shots during the period.
Shenandoah made a fierce push in the fourth period, forcing seven penalty corners and putting five shots toward the net. The Hornets finally broke through at the 56:06 mark when Kierney Weigle converted off a pass from Ellie Quinn following a penalty corner, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
In the final minutes, Shenandoah created one last scoring opportunity with a penalty corner at 59:15, but Winans registered a critical save on Camryn DeLeva's attempt, and a subsequent shot went wide to seal the UMW victory.
