Football Wins Big in Home Opener

WINCHESTER, Va. - Under the lights of Glo Fiber Field at Shentel Stadium, the Shenandoah University football team earned a 48-14 non-conference win on Saturday night against Geneva College (Pa.).

The Hornets' (2-0) defense forced five first-half turnovers, and quarterback Mekhi Brown had four touchdowns and 264 passing yards against the Golden Torandoes (1-1).

RECAP

On the second play from scrimmage, Jacob Marion perfectly read a Golden Tornadoes pass play and picked it off for a pick-six, putting Shenandoah up 7-0 less than a minute into the game.

The next drive saw the visitors drive 76 yards down the field and set up a goal-to-go situation. On first down, from the Hornets' 1-yard line, it looked like Geneva might tie the game, but Gabriel Sanchez forced a fumble, which was recovered by Devin Keasey.

In the middle of the first, on a 2nd-and-3 from SU's 27-yard line, Mekhi Brown stepped back in the pocket and launched a 73-yard touchdown pass to Roge't Walker for the second SU touchdown of the game.

Three offensive plays later for Shenandoah, Brown connected with Jackson McFarland for a 38-yard strike, putting the home team up 21-0 heading into the second.

Early in the second and with the Golden Tornadoes driving, Jaren Mitchell made a diving effort for SU, forcing another fumble. The fumble was picked up by Eric May and returned to around midfield. The Hornets went on a seven-play drive after the fumble, capping it off with an 18-yard touchdown reception for Bryce Buchanan.

Two plays after Buchanan's touchdown, Jeremiah Wyatt came up with an interception at midfield for the SU defense, once again setting up a short field for the offense. Shenandoah ran the ball with Aidan McCloskey on three straight plays, ending with a 14-yard rushing touchdown. A blocked extra-point attempt kept SU's lead at 34-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, Geneva muffed the reception and Jahri Whitfield jumped on top of the loose ball for SU at Geneva's 12-yard line. Three plays later, Brown found Caleb Weston for a 20-yard touchdown, giving SU a 41-0 lead with 6:56 left in the second quarter.

Geneva scored once in the second quarter, as the Hornets took a 41-7 lead into halftime. The score remained the same heading to the fourth, as neither team scored in the third.

The Golden Tornadoes got on the board one more time, as they returned a blocked SU punt for a touchdown. However, the Hornets drove down the field and answered right back with a Kevaughn Mitchell rushing touchdown for a 48-14 lead, which would hold as the final score.

Walker was Brown's top target, as the receiver had seven receptions for 110 yards. McFarland, Weston, Carter Rodriguez, and Henry Houberg also had multiple receptions for SU.

McCloskey led the SU rushers with 44 total yards on 11 carries and one touchdown.

Shenandoah's defense came up with five sacks, led by two from Andrew Taylor and Xaiver Brewer. Nick English led Shenandoah in total tackles with nine; Jaren Mitchell had a team-high seven solo tackles.

UP NEXT

The Hornets take a trip up to Case Western Reserve University next Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for Noon in Cleveland, Ohio.
