Football's Rally Falls Short in Road Loss to CWRU

CLEVELAND, OH. - The Shenandoah University football team was defeated 48-41 on the road at Case Western Reserve University on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (2-1) trailed 27-0 early in the second quarter but were able to bring it to a one-score game on four separate occasions; however, a fourth-down conversion in the fourth sealed the win for the Spartans (2-0).

RECAP

Case Western returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown for a 7-0 lead 15 seconds into the game. The Hornets were forced to punt four times in the first quarter, which allowed the Spartans to take a 27-0 lead early in the second.

Mekhi Brown found Jackson McFarland for a 12-yard touchdown with 7:50 to go in the second quarter, putting SU on the board. Shenandoah then tried an onside kick with Carson Gallant and recovered the try, putting the ball back in SU's hands.

On the very next play, Roge't Walker made a 40-yard reception, setting up a Caleb Weston 13-yard touchdown reception. SU trailed 27-13 midway through the second.

On Case Western's next drive, Kamran Mosley forced an interception for the SU defense, returning the ball to SU's 40-yard line. The Hornets proceeded to go on a seven-play drive for 60 yards, capped off by Will Yoder's first career touchdown reception from 18 yards out, cutting SU's deficit down to seven. However, the Spartans rushed for a 53-yard touchdown on the next play to retake a 14-point lead, 34-20. That score would hold heading into halftime.

Neither team scored on their first possession of the second half, with a Jaren Mitchell fumble recovery stopping the Spartans' scoring chance inside the redzone. Mekhi Brown led the Hornets' offense on a 95-yard drive, ending in a 14-yard rushing touchdown by the QB to once, making it a 34-27 game.

Two plays later, Steven Jones intercepted another pass for the Hornets, giving the road team a chance to tie the game. However, CWRU's defense forced another SU punt to keep the lead in its favor. They took advantage of the punt and scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive, pushing its lead back to 14.

With 12:01 left in the game, Weston made his second touchdown reception of the game to cut SU's deficit back down to seven, 41-34. The Hornets' defense forced a three-and-out, keeping the game alive for the Hornets. The Spartans' defense made up for the three-and-out and came up with a pick-six to take a 48-34 lead with 8:36 left in the game.

Shenandoah moved quickly down the field for a 3:18, 10-play, 80-yard touchdown drive, making it a one-score game once again. Case Western chewed the final 5:11 off the clock to hold on for the win and stop SU's comeback attempt.

Mekhi Brown passed for 414 yards, which is ninth all-time in a single game for the Hornets. The quarterback had six total touchdowns: four through the air and two on the ground.

Weston, Yoder, Cooper Minnix, and Aidan McCloskey each had a team-high seven receptions. Weston led the team with 95 receiving yards. Minnix, Yoder, McCloskey, McFarland, and Walker all had at least 40 receiving yards.

Defensively, Jaren Mitchell led the team with eight tackles, plus the fumble recovery. Ryan Apietu had the lone sack of the day for the SU defense. Devin Keasey had a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and a tackle for loss.

Shenandoah's punter, Connor Moyssiadis, had six punts for 198 yards, plus a 50-plus-yard punt.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah has a bye week for week four of the season. The Hornets return to the field on October 3rd against Hampden-Sydney College in the ODAC opener and homecoming for the Hornets. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
