Women's Volleyball Splits at Marymount

ARLINGTON, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday afternoon at Marymount University. SU defeated Ramapo College 3-2 in its first match of the day, before falling 3-0 to host school Marymount.

RAMAPO RECAP

The Roadrunners (2-3)  came out and used a 7-0 and 5-0 run to take the first set 25-15. The Hornets (3-2) came back and took the next two sets of the match, regaining control of the match.

In the second set, SU fell behind 3-0 but was able to tie the set by the 12-point mark, thanks to kills from Hannah Hylton and Kiyah Robinson. However, the Hornets couldn't get the lead as the Roadrunners led late, 19-15. Ramapo then pushed its lead up to 23-19, as it looked like the Hornets might fall behind 2-0 in the match. However, SU ended the set on a 6-0 run with five kills and an ace as a team, winning the second 25-23.

Shenandoah continued its momentum and took an early lead in the third, 8-4. Ramapo cut its deficit down to two, but an 8-0 run for the Hornets pushed them in front by ten, 19-9. It was enough for the Hornets to hold on to the lead for the rest of the set and win, 25-19.

The Roadrunners would take the fourth set, 25-19, to force the winner-take-all fifth frame.

In the fifth, SU led 4-2, but Ramapo rallied back for a 6-4 lead. An Ashlynn Spence kill and an assist block with Danica Duncan tied it at 7-7 for SU. Robinson and Hylton gave the Hornets their next two points for a 9-7 lead. Shenandoah controlled the remainder of the frame, winning 15-10, as Amber Shifflett provided the winning kill.

Hylton led the Hornets with 19 kills. Susan Smith and Amanda Schaffer tied for the team-high in assists with 21. Samantha Shy, Hylton, and Robinson were top three in digs for SU.

MARYMOUNT RECAP

The first two sets of the Saints' (4-2) 3-0 win had to go to extra points, with the home team taking each set 26-24. In the first set, neither team led by more than three points at any point. The set also featured 19 ties and nine lead changes.

The second set saw SU take a 7-1 lead behind aces from Amanda Schaffer and Hannah Hylton, along with kills by Danica Duncan and Alana Washington. The Hornets held the lead until a 7-0 run powered the Saints to a 12-9 advantage. Kamryn Keasey and Vanessa Rodriguez teamed together for a block that put the Hornets back in the lead, 16-15. Shenandoah's last lead of the set was 23-22, which was overtaken by a set-ending run of 4-1 for Marymount.

The Saints won the third set 25-18 to win the match. SU's only lead of the third was a 1-0 to begin the frame.

Hylton once again led the team in kills, this time with 11. Keasey was second for SU with six. First-year Riley Link had a team-high three blocks.
