No. 20 Field Hockey Upsets No. 7 Franklin & Marshall in Double Overtime Behind McCloskey's Goal

LANCASTER, Pa. - The No. 20 Shenandoah University field hockey team upset No. 7 Franklin & Marshall College 1-0 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon on the road in the first-ever meeting between the teams.

First-year Rylin McCloskey scored her first career goal 99 seconds into the second overtime period to lift the Hornets (5-1) past the Diplomats (5-1).

RECAP

The Hornets had two shots on goal from Kierney Weigle and Reagan Flory, but were unable to get any shots off in the second quarter. Franklin & Marshall had a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal at the end of the first half. Starting goalie Cassidy Alexander stopped all four shots in the first two quarters. Alexander ended the game with eight saves.

Camryn DeLeva picked up the first SU shot of the third quarter, which was blocked and followed up with a shot on target from Ella Robins, which was stopped. Those were the only shots SU had in the third quarter.

In the fourth, Franklin & Marshall had the best chance of the frame to score, but Alexander came up with a save to send the game to overtime. The goalie then came up big in the first overtime period, stopping two F&M shots and keeping the Hornets alive.

Early in the second overtime period, Weigle fired a shot that was saved, but the rebound bounced out to Rylin McCloskey, who lofted the ball into the net for the game-winner.

The Hornets have now won their last seven overtime/shootout games, dating back to 2024.

The Hornets are home next Saturday as they celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their first ODAC Championship when they host Sewanee at 1 p.m.
