Women's Volleyball Splits at Electric City Invitational

SCRANTON, Pa. - The Shenandoah University women's volleyball team competed in the Electric City Invitational at the University of Scranton on Saturday, splitting the two matches. The Hornets (4-4) earned a 3-0 win over the Hartwick College Hawks (5-5) and then lost 3-2 to the host Royals (6-4).

HARTWICK RECAP

The Hornets swept the match 25-22, 25-18, 25-17.

In the first set, the Hornets fell behind 9-3 early. The Hawks' lead slowly grew to 12-5, but SU was able to chip away and tie the set, 20-20, on a block from Hannah Hylton and Danica Duncan. Service aces from Hylton and Susan Smith helped give SU the lead, and a solo block from Ashlynn Spence ended the opening set, 25-22.

With the second set tied 5-5, the Hornets went on to take a 10-6 lead, which grew to double digits at 20-10. Myah Watson had consecutive kills to help put SU up 23-12, with two Hartwick service errors helping SU reach a 25-18 win.

In the final frame, the Hornets grabbed an 8-7 lead thanks to a Hawks' attack error and never looked back, holding the lead for the rest of the set. Watson, Hylton, and Spence provided the last three points for the Hornets, each picking up a kill.

Amanda Schaffer led the Hornets with four aces and 14 assists. Samantha Shy had a team-high 10 digs.

SCRANTON RECAP

Scranton took the first set 25-18, but the Hornets rebounded with a 25-21 win in the second to tie the match. The second set was back-and-forth until a 9-1 run pushed SU to a 17-11 lead. The Hornets had five kills during the run, including multiple from Alana Washington and Myah Watson.

The third set was taken by the home team, 25-21, putting the Hornets back against the wall. That didn't slow down SU, as they took a 3-0 lead in the fourth. The lead reached five points, 11-6, thanks to kills from Ashlynn Spence and Hannah Hylton. The Hornets kept the Royals from holding the lead for the rest of the set, winning 27-25 off another Spence kill.

Despite tying the match 2-2, the Hornets fell in the five sets, as Scranton walked away with a 15-11 set five win.

With 23 assists in the match, Amanda Schaffer now has over 1,000 career assists between her time at SU, Aurora University, and McHenry County College.

Hannah Hylton led the team in kills (18) and digs (13). Myah Watson had a team-high eight blocks.
