Women's Volleyball Defeated by RMC in Five Sets

ASHLAND, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's volleyball team dropped a five-set ODAC thriller at Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday evening.

The Yellow Jackets (6-4, 2-0 ODAC) took the decisive fifth set thanks to a 7-1 run after the Hornets (4-5, 0-2) were up 11-8 late in the frame.

RECAP

Shenandoah came out fast with a 13-7 lead in the first set, helped out by five kills as a team and consecutive service aces from Hannah Hylton. Randolph-Macon brought the score to 15-12 in favor of the Hornets, with the visitors able to extend the lead back to six, 18-12. After the teams alternated points, the Yellow Jackets once again cut their deficit down to three, 22-19. However, the Hornets were able to hold on and take the opening set, 25-19, capping it off with an Amanda Schaffer ace.

Randolph-Macon flipped the script in sets two and three, gaining a 2-1 advantage in the match after winning the sets 25-17 and 25-23, respectively. The Yellow Jackets led for all of set two, while the third set featured six ties and three lead changes.

Two blocks from Myah Watson and another block from Riley Link helped the Hornets grab a 5-0 lead in the fourth set. The Yellow Jackets flew back with a 5-0 run of their own, before two kills by Hylton helped the Hornets take an 8-5 lead. RMC ended up taking a lead later in the frame, 18-17, but SU responded with an 8-1 run to regain the advantage, 22-18. An Ashlynn Spence kill gave the Hornets the fourth set, 25-21, forcing a winner-take-all fifth.

Early in the fifth, 3.5 points from Link helped Shenandoah take a 6-3 lead. The first-year had two kills, a solo block, and a block assist during the stretch. Spence and Alana Washington extended SU's lead to 9-5, prior to Susan Smith joining Spence for a block, which put the Hornets up 10-6. However, that's where RMC's 7-1 run would begin to claim the win.

Spence led the Hornets with 11 kills and six total blocks. Schaffer had the team high in assists with 13, while Samantha Shy led the team in digs with seven.
