Men's Tennis Opens Play at CNU Invitational

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Shenandoah University men's tennis team opened play at the CNU Invitational on Saturday, taking on Batten College and Salisbury University in a dual match-style weekend hosted by Christopher Newport University.

Match 1: Shenandoah vs. Batten

Shenandoah grabbed early momentum against Batten, taking three of the four doubles matches. The top pairing of Lucas Beasley and Benjamin Brasfield secured an 8-4 victory over Platts and Jasund, while Shine Tokas and Gray Broermann edged out ter Schiphorst and Oster 8-6. Jacob Kim and Max Arkans added an 8-3 win over Hendrix and Dixon, while Tommy Cowell and Marcel Mizerski fell narrowly in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-1), to Muller and van der Stam.

In singles play, the Hornets won five of the eight matches to seal a strong overall team display:

  • No. 1 Singles: Platts (BATN) def. Shine Tokas (SU), 7-5, 4-6, 10-7

  • No. 2 Singles: Muller (BATN) def. Lucas Beasley (SU), 6-3, 3-6, 10-8

  • No. 3 Singles: Benjamin Brasfield (SU) def. Oster (BATN), 6-4, 6-4

  • No. 4 Singles: Gray Broermann (SU) def. van der Stam (BATN), 6-1, 3-6, 10-7

  • No. 5 Singles: Jasund (BATN) def. Marcel Mizerski (SU), 2-6, 6-4, 10-2

  • No. 6 Singles: Tommy Cowell (SU) def. ter Schiphorst (BATN), 6-4, 6-2

  • No. 7 Singles: Max Arkans (SU) def. Dixon (BATN), 6-3, 6-1

  • No. 8 Singles: Jacob Kim (SU) def. Hendrix (BATN), 6-0, 4-6, 10-7

Match 2: Shenandoah vs. Salisbury

Salisbury swept doubles play to start the second match of the day. Stabile and O'Dea defeated Beasley and Brasfield 8-2, Jacobs and Guyot pulled out an 8-7 (7-3) tiebreak win over Tokas and Broermann, and Pham and Pham-Kobayashi earned an 8-2 victory over Cowell and Mizerski.

Despite the deficit after doubles, Shenandoah fought back fiercely at the top of the singles lineup, earning three impressive comeback victories against Salisbury:

  • No. 1 Singles: Shine Tokas (SU) def. Pham (SAL), 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-7

  • No. 2 Singles: Lucas Beasley (SU) def. Stabile (SAL), 6-3, 7-6 (7-5)

  • No. 3 Singles: Benjamin Brasfield (SU) def. Jacobs (SAL), 2-6, 7-6 (7-1), 12-10

  • No. 4 Singles: Pham-Kobayashi (SAL) def. Gray Broermann (SU), 6-4, 4-6, 10-7

  • No. 5 Singles: Guyot (SAL) def. Marcel Mizerski (SU), 6-2, 6-0

  • No. 6 Singles: O'Dea (SAL) def. Tommy Cowell (SU), 6-3, 6-0

  • No. 7 Singles: Catull (SAL) def. Max Arkans (SU), 6-2, 6-4
