WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University closed out its inaugural football season in Shentel Stadium with a 35-16 non-league victory over Utica (N.Y.) Saturday afternoon.

Playing on a sun-splashed day before 2447 fans at Shentel, the Hornets (4-5) opened up a 28-0 lead before coasting home to the 19-point win over the first-year Pioneers (0-7).

Dennis Robart scored the first two touchdowns of the game for SU, blasting over from the 1 and 6 at 7:51 and 2:01 of the second quarter, respectively.

Two third quarter touchdown runs, by Wes Karns at 8:32 and Richard Hodge on the final play of the stanza, expanded the lead out to four TDs.

Utica sandwiched a pair of one-yard touchdown plays around an LJ Curry nine-yard TD run in the fourth to provide the final margin.

Shenandoah outgained the Pioneers, 245 to 202, with all but 20 of the Hornets yards coming on the ground. SU also held the ball for 33:34.

Gregg Anderson had 10 tackles with Andy Truslow, LeShawn Haley and Kalvin Oliver all registering sacks.
