DANVILLE, Va. – The SU men's basketball team upped its record to 8-3 Saturday afternoon with a 78-52 victory at Averett University.

Shenandoah (8-3, 1-1) raced out to an 11-4 lead in the first 5:39 behind a combined nine points from juniors Chad Brashears (Hagerstown, Md./St. Maria Goretti) and John Tigney (Winchester, Va./James Wood).

Following an Averett (1-11, 0-2) timeout, coach Rob Harris' club forced a second Cougar TO with an 8-4 run over the next 3:15 to extend the advantage to 20-8.

The hosts then went on an 8-1 run against the SU reserves to cut the deficit to just five at 21-16, but Shenandoah effectively ended the contest with an 18-3 run over the final 11:11 of the first.

Brashears and Tigney, making their third and fourth starts of the year, respectfully, led the Hornets in the victory. Tigney tied his career high with 15 points in 23 minutes while Brashears added 10 in 20 minutes.

Senior Tyson Thompson (Keysville, Va./Randolph Henry) had 14 points in his final southside Virginia performance; his first 3-point bucket of the ballgame allowed him to pass Coach Rob Harris '91 for sixth place on the all-time list. Thompson is now just one 'trey' from tying Shane Clancy '96 for the No. 5 spot.

Every player in uniform saw action for just the third time this season; 10 of the 14 active players scored at least one bucket.

Shenandoah will continue Dixie Conference action Tuesday evening at Ferrum College. Game time is set for 7:30.
