MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The women's basketball team was unable to gain a weekend sweep of Dixie Conference action Sunday afternoon as host Chowan College emerged victorious from the Helms Center 69-50.
After falling behind by as much as 10 in the first half, SU (6-6, 2-3) cut the deficit to six at 27-21 by the break on the strength of nine points from freshman Dee Fisher (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) and six by center Katie Woods (Winchester, Va./Sherando). Fisher added eight rebounds to lead all players in that category as well.
A Fisher trey gave SU its first lead of the game at 38-37 with 12:00 remaining, but host CC (10-3, 4-1) regained the lead for good by scoring the next eight points of the game and 11 of the 13 overall before Hornets coach Kathy Orsini called timeout at 7:29.
The Lady Braves continued their scoring run following the Shenandoah timeout and eventually led by as much as 14 before Jenny Gray (Sumerduck, Va./Liberty) cut the gap to 11 by converting a three-point play with 3:45 left. Unfortunately for the visitors, this is as close as they would be able to get before being forced to foul in the waning moments.
Fisher led Shenandoah with 14 points with Woods chipping in 13.
Ashley Winslow had 20 points for Chowan.
