Roanoke Defeats Field Hockey

WINCHESTER, Va. - Roanoke College spoiled Shenandoah University's first ever home varsity field hockey match with a 7-1 victory Wednesday afternoon at the Seale Property Field.

Roanoke (7-2) used three goals in the first 3:24 of the contest to coast to the triumph over the first year Hornets (0-3).

Freshman Carly Smith (Reedsville, Va./Northumberland) netted the hosts first-ever home goal with her unassisted tally in the 48th minute. Smith's scored by receiving a long pass and beating two RC defenders to the ball. Her shot from just inside the arc then went through Maroons goalkeeper Beth Lichty's legs.

Erin Walsch and Sara Lundgren each had two goals for Roanoke while Kelly Busik added two assists.

SU keeper Wendy Taylor (Cape May, N.J./Cape May Regional) made 11 saves in the losing effort.
