WINCHESTER, Va. - The SU women's basketball team gained its first season sweep Saturday afternoon by outlasting the Averett University Lady Cougars 65-54.
Shenandoah (9-8, 4-5) defeated AU (1-18, 1-8) for the second time in three weeks on the strength of a 10 point halftime lead.Â
Freshman Dee Fisher (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) once again was the story in the scoring column. Included in Fisher's career high 27 points was the bucket that proved to be the game winner, a three-pointer that gave her squad a 7-4 lead 2:35 into the contest.
The Lady Cougars would get no closer than one point the rest of the way and found themselves in a double digit hole for all but 1:54 of the second half.
Orsini's squad expanded its lead to 19 by the 4:01 mark and if not for a 7-2 AU run in the final 47 seconds, would have had its largest Dixie margin of victory this season.Â
Fisher was the only Hornets player in double figures; sophomore Jenny Gray (Sumerduck, Va./Liberty) had nine points while freshman Tynecia Nelms (Bedford, Va./Staunton River) had a game high eight rebounds.
