Women Stage Late Comeback, Stun Lady Pride

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University started slowly in its women's basketball game against USA South opponent Greensboro College on Saturday afternoon, but the Hornets stormed back late to take a 72-60 victory.

SU (5-10 overall, 3-4 USA South) trailed by seven points at the half, but the visiting Lady Pride (7-8, 2-4) could not stave off the Hornets second half charge.

With 9:35 remaining in the contest, Greensboro freshman Ruthanne Clark knocked down a pair of free throws to give the Lady Pride a comfortable nine point lead, and an ensuing turnover by SU junior Jenny Gray (Sumerduck, Va./Liberty) seemed to seal the lid on a GC win. Unfortunately for the visitors, their hosts were through with being hospitable.

Gray subsequently stole the ball back and found sophomore Tynecia Nelms (Bedford, Va./Staunton River) under the hoop where she drew an easy foul for a trip to the charity stripe. That small shift in momentum sent Greensboro into a tailspin from which it would not recover.

Shenandoah blitzed the Lady Pride with a 20-3 run in the next 7:06 to take a 64-56 lead with just over two minutes left to play. As the clock wound down all that was left was for the Hornets to remain consistent at the foul line and cruise to the 12-point triumph.

Sophomore Dee Fisher (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) led all scorers with 22 points, her third highest total of the season and the fourth time she reached the 20-point plateau. Junior Adina Trammel (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun Co.) and freshman Cassie Womack (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) added 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Greensboro was led by the sophomore tandem of Sally Rice (13 points) and Christina Daniels (11 points) in the loss.
