WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team earned its initial win of the 2003-04 season Wednesday evening with a 71-62 victory over Penn State-Altoona.
SU (1-6) snaps an eight game losing streak with the win, while PSU-Altoona falls to 1-7.
Shenandoah rode the strength of a strong first half in getting the victory. The Hornets shot a season best 61.5 percent (16 for 26) in the first half as SU jumped out to a 38-20 halftime advantage.
Conversely, the Lions were 6 for 29 (20.7 percent) in the first 20 minutes of play and had just one player who scored more than four points.
The visitors turned it around after the break; they were able to cut the deficit to eight on four different occasions, the last with 35 seconds left. Unfortunately for them, a 6 for 6 performance from the line by sophomore Dee Fisher (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) in the final 32 seconds sealed the hosts triumph.
Senior Katie Woods (Winchester, Va./Sherando) led all scorers with 19, while Fisher and Joia Davis (Trenton, NJ/Stuart County) had 13 and Jenny Gray (Sumerduck, Va./Liberty) 10 with eight assists.
Lindsey Barr had 13 for the Lions.
