FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The women's basketball team matched its win total from the 2002-03 season with a 51-50 USA South Conference victory at Methodist Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (12-12 overall, 9-6 USA South) can set a school record with its 10th conference victory in the regular season finale tomorrow afternoon at Greensboro. Saturday's win, combined with Ferrum's victory over NC Wesleyan, assures SU of playing in the No. 4 vs No. 5 seed game in next week's USA South Conference Tournament.Â
The Hornets will face Peace in the first round of the tourney; if SU wins Sunday at Greensboro the Hornets will be the No. 4 seed. A GC win gives Peace a tie for fourth and they hold the tie-breaker over Shenandoah.
In Saturday's win over Methodist (9-15, 5-10), sophomore Dee Fisher (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) led her squad in a rare off-the-bench performance with a game-high 12 points.
The Hornets salvaged the victory when the Lady Monarchs were unable to hit one of three opportunities in the final seconds of the contest. SU in-bounded the ball with 11 seconds left, but sophomore Joia Davis (Trenton, N.J./Stuart Co.) missed a layup and MC raced the length of the floor to set up a possible game-winning shot before missing three consecutive shots from the paint.
