Late Rally Falls Short for Baseball

LYNCHBURG, Va. - For the second straight day a late rally narrowly missed the mark for Shenandoah baseball as Lynchburg College opened up an eight-run lead and held on for the 9-6 victory.

The Hornets (0-2) opened up the scoring once again when sophomore Joe Harpine (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) singled to drive in senior Josh Bosley (Oakland, Md./Garrett CC) in the top of the second inning, giving SU a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, the success was short-lived as LC (1-2) touched starter Keith Fritz (Frederick, Md./Frederick CC) for three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Shenandoah would give up nine unanswered runs through seven innings while Lynchburg starting pitcher Jay Moore looked nearly untouchable going seven innings and allowing SU just the one earned run on six hits.

The LC coaches pulled Moore with a 9-1 lead after seven innings, and Robert Lydick held Shenandoah scoreless in the eighth, but SU would not give up.

In the top of the ninth, the Hornets torched Lydick for four runs on four hits before registering any outs to cut the Lynchburg lead to 9-5. Shenandoah would only be able to register one more run against the Lynchburg pitching staff before committing its final three outs and giving LC the 9-6 win.

Shenandoah will be gunning for its first victory of the 2004 season on Wednesday as the Hornets travel to Bridgewater for a nonconference game at 2:30 PM.
