WINCHESTER, Va. - Christopher Newport snapped a two-game winning streak for the Shenandoah women's basketball team Wednesday afternoon by handing the Hornets a 67-56 home loss to open the second rotation of USA South play.
The Hornets (6-11 overall, 4-5 USA South) stunned their rivals out of the gate by ascending to a 10-3 lead at the 15:30 mark of the first half, but the Lady Captains (13-6, 8-2) kept their composure and spent the remainder of the opening period chipping away at the SU advantage.
In eerily similar fashion to their first meeting of the season - a 76-59 CNU win - the Hornets held their adversaries down in the first half before a late breakdown. Crisp SU defense and an elevated pace of play gave the hosts a 30-26 edge at the intermission.
Early in the second half the game remained close and appeared to be on its way to finishing in a dogfight until the Lady Captains went on a 15-0 run beginning at the 9:47 mark. By the time the Hornets would score again - with 4:35 left to play - the visitors were ahead by 10 points and the game was no longer salvageable.
Junior Adina Trammel (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun Co.) led all scorers with 19 points and narrowly missed a double-double with nine boards. Freshman Cassie Womack (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) and sophomore Dee Fisher (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) also poured in 10 points apiece.
The senior wrecking crew of Amber Hallman and Tomorrow Lofton did the majority of the damage for the Lady Captains as both finished with 16 points. Hallman also barely missed a triple-double adding 11 rebounds and 9 blocks.
