MURFREESBORO, N.C. - In a rematch of an earlier USA South loss for the Shenandoah Hornets, Chowan College used a 14-point second half cushion to stave off a late SU comeback and complete a season sweep of the Hornets, 80-76.
The Hornets (7-12 overall, 5-6 USA South) outshot the Lady Braves (11-6, 9-2) 47.6-percent to 38.2-percent in the opening stanza, but still found themselves down ten points, 38-28, at the intermission.
Unfortunately for SU, the worst was yet to come. Chowan extended its lead to 14-points, 67-53, with 6:03 left to play when Joi Hazel converted a breakaway off a turnover by SU freshman Alicia Sanders (Wardensville, W.Va./East Hardy).
At that point the Hornets had had enough. Shenandoah rattled off a 23-10 run sparked largely by the tremendous post play of freshman Cassie Womack (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) and junior Adina Trammel (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun Co.) to pull within one point, 77-76, with just seconds remaining.
The clock and a last-second turnover by Womack, however, proved to be the Hornets undoing as SU dropped the final decision to earn a 1-1 split for the weekend.
