WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University baseball team earned its first doubleheader sweep of the 2004 season Tuesday afternoon with 11-3 and 4-3 victories over Penn State - Altoona.
SU (4-5) has now won three of its last four ballgames. Today's action was the season opener for the Lions (0-2).
The Hornets made quick work of game one; SU scored five runs in the bottom of the first to give freshman Keith Fritz (Urbana, Md./Frederick CC) all the support he would need. Fritz improved to 2-0 on the season with his second complete game victory. He gave up three runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out two.
Freshman Steven Todd (Hillsboro, Va./Loudoun Valley) provided the big blow in that first at-bat when he followed up Josh Bosley's (Oakland, Md./Garrett CC) two-run double with a three-run home run to right field. This would prove to be all the offense that Fritz would need as PSU-Altoona never got closer than three runs the rest of the way.
Bosley finished 3 for 3 with 3 RBI on the day, Todd 2 for 4 with 5 RBI and Adam Kuchemba (Plains, Pa./Coughlin) was 3 for 4 with a home run. Senior Tyler Daniel (Richmond, Va./JR Tucker) rounded out the Hornets offense with a 2 for 3 afternoon that included a run batted in and two runs scored.Â
Game two was much closer; Shenandoah needed a two-out RBI single to left by freshman David Jenkins (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) to break a 3-3 tie and seal the victory.
Sophomore Gerry Sasse (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) improved to 2-1 by pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Sasse allowed an inherited runner to score in the top of the sixth, but induced three fly-outs in the top of the seventh to earn the win.
Jenkins, Mike Arvizo (Palmdale, Calif./Antelope Valley) and Nick Sborz (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) all were 2 for 3 with a run scored.
