WINCHESTER, Va. - Greensboro College took advantage of five Shenandoah University errors to score three unearned runs Sunday afternoon in a 5-3 USA South Conference victory over host SU.
Shenandoah (12-12 overall, 3-9 USA South) allowed the Pride (17-7, 6-6) unearned runs in the first, fifth and seventh innings to give Greensboro the rubber game of the three-game weekend series. The two teams had split a doubleheader on Saturday.
The Pride got what would prove to be the winning runs in the fifth when they combined three hits with two SU errors to score three runs. Leftfielder Jeremy Morrison provided the big blow with a two-run double down the leftfield line with one out.
Morrison's two-bagger scored Brent Cole and Brent Justice, who had reached base on a walk and a single, respectively.
Shenandoah added single runs in the fifth and sixth to get within one, but GC pitcher Chatham Bray allowed just one baserunner over the final three innings to earn the complete game victory.
Morrison led all hitters with a 4 for 5 day that included the double and the two RBI while Jeremy Egan was 2 for 4.
Catcher Mike Arvizo (Palmdale, Calif./Antelope Valley) was 3 for 4 with two RBI for the hosts. He singled home the Hornets first run of the game in the 2nd inning and then plated Josh Bosley (Oakland, Md./Garrett CC) with the final run of the game for SU with two outs in the sixth.
Senior JR Creamer (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley) fell to 0-4 on the season after giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits in 4.1 innings. Gerry Sasse (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) pitched the final 4.2 innings and scattered five hits and one run against three strikeouts.
