FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - No. 23 Mary Washington College ended Shenandoah University's non-league winning streak at 11 games Thursday afternoon with a 9-2 victory at Dickinson Stadium.
MWC (18-5) blew open the game with an eight-run second inning over SU (14-13). The Eagles scored the eight runs on eight hits to chase Hornets starter Jason Burgess (Severn, Md./Cardinal Gibbons), who faced nine batters in the second before turning it over to senior J.R. Creamer (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley).
After yielding a single run in the third, Creamer shut Mary Washington down the rest of the way. Creamer struck out five and gave up three runs and three walks in the final seven innings of work.
Shenandoah got on the board in the top of the eighth when Nick Sborz (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) drove in two runs with an infield single. Joe Harpine (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) and Steven Todd (Hillsboro, Va./Loudoun Valley) scored on the play; they reached on an error and a fielder's choice, respectively.
Mike Arvizo (Palmdale, Calif./Antelope Valley) and Adam Kuchemba (Plains, Pa./Coughlin) both had two hits for the Hornets.
