WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University continued its winning baseball ways Monday night with a 9-1 non-league victory over Bridgewater College.
The win is the Hornets fifth in the last seven games and gives SU (17-14) split of the season series with Bridgewater (13-12). BC opened the home and home series with a 10-5 win on February 25. This victory also gives the program its most wins since the 2000 team won a school record 31 games.
The Hornets got all of the runs they would need in the bottom of the first inning when four runners crossed the plate on the strength of four hits and two walks. Senior Mike Arvizo (Palmdale, Calif./Antelope Valley) and freshman Steven Todd (Hillsboro, Va./Loudoun Valley) both drove in two runs in the frame, Arvizo with a single to right and Todd on a home run to left.Â
Todd's blast, his third of the season, gave SU a three-run lead which was more than enough for sophomore Keith Fritz (Urbana, Md./Frederick CC). Fritz tossed his third complete game of the season and improved to 6-3 by scattering five hits and three walks against a career high nine strikeouts. He retired the Eagles in order in four innings, including the eighth and ninth, and allowed just two runners to reach third base after surrendering the single run in the first.
Sophomore Adam Kuchemba (Plains, Pa./Coughlin) gave the Hornets some breathing room in the sixth with a two-run homer to left. He finished the day 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
