Freshman Lead Women's Lax Win

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University advanced to its second straight USA South Conference women's lacrosse tournament semi-final with a 20-7 victory over fifth seeded Ferrum College Tuesday afternoon in soggy Winchester.

SU (6-5) gave up the games first goal to Ferrum (3-10), but then reeled off the next 10 goals to cruise to its fourth straight win over the Lady Panthers.

The Hornets now move on to face top seeded Christopher Newport in the first semi-final on Friday. This game will start at 1:00 and will be held on the Ferrum College campus.

Freshman Becky Smith (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) had three of her co-game high six goals during this run while Lauren Prentice (Westminister, Md./Liberty) added two of her six.

SU was able to go on this run by dominating the game's possession; coach Lois Bowers' club won 11 of the 14 draw controls in the first and scooped up 32 of the 47 groundballs. Freshman Erika Bradd (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) played a major part in this by grabbing a second best in school history 11 draw controls and also picking up a co-team high nine groundballs.

Bradd finished with two goals and one assist for three points.

Shenandoah senior Sharon Sparwasser (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) celebrated her final home game by moving into a tie with Ashley Keller '97 for second place on the all-time scoring list with 114 points. Sparwasser had a two goals and an assist on Tuesday.

Ferrum, which got the game's initial goal at the 28:01 mark on an unassisted tally by Ginni Matern, received three goals from Matern and two from Noelle Sanderson.

FC keeper Mariah Koptis made 21 saves in the losing effort.
