WINCHESTER, Va. - Sophomore
Alicia Sanders led a group of four players in double figures as Shenandoah University defeated Averett in USA South Conference women's basketball action Monday night.
Shenandoah (4-9, 1-4 USA South) erased a three-point halftime deficit and took control of the game with a 7-0 run midway through the second half. Up until this point, the two teams were tied 11 times and traded the lead on nine others.
The Hornets gradually expanded their lead until getting it to double digits by the 5:07 mark; Averett (4-8, 2-3 USA South) made a brief run but could get no closer than six points the rest of the way.
Up 67-60 after Shirley McRae hit a three-pointer with 2:57 remaining, Shenandoah scored six points in the next 80 seconds to lead 75-63 with 1:37 left. This effectively ended the contest as the Lady Cougars were unable to get the deficit back to single digits until Hanna Taylor hit a pair of free throws at the 42 second mark. Cassie Womack 10 to go along with a game-high 13 rebounds.
Taylor, who was named conference rookie of the week for Averett on Monday, had 16 for the Lady Cougars. She also had a team-high 11 rebounds.
