ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Shenandoah University started the spring semester in style Wednesday afternoon, outscoring host St. Mary's College, 11-6, in the overtime period to take a 71-66 victory in women's basketball action in Somerset Gymnasium.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 2-4 overall on the season, while the Seahawks fall to 5-6 overall with the loss.

Shenandoah almost didn't make it to the overtime; St. Mary's forward Amanda Polidoro converted a buzzer beating lay-up for the Seahawks at the end of regulation and was fouled in the process. Her potential game winning free throw rimmed out and the game went to the extra session.

SU outscored the Seahawks 24-12 in the paint and 16-8 in fast break opportunities. Both teams had trouble from the floor with the Hornets connecting at a 32.9 percent clip (23-70), compared to 30.4 percent (24-79) for St. Mary's College.

Sophomore guard Alicia Sanders (Wardensville, W. Va./East Hardy) and freshman guard Netagia Foreman (Winchester, Va./Sherando) tied for game-high scoring honors for the Hornets with 20 points. Foreman also added nine rebounds and a game-high six assists with three steals. Freshman guard Ashley Suddarth (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) recorded a double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds while sophomore forward Cassie Womack (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) claimed a team-high 11 rebounds in the contest.
