WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University opened its 2005-06 season Friday night by advancing to the Apple Tip-Off Tournament championship for the third time in four seasons with an 86-67 victory over St. Mary's of Maryland.
Shenandoah (1-0) will take on Muskingum (Ohio) in Saturday's championship at 4:00. The Muskies advanced to the title game with a 148-125 win over Redlands (Calif.) in Friday's first contest.
SU defeated the Seahawks (0-1) behind a career-high 30 points from sophomore forwardÂ
Jeremiah Lawrence, 16 from juniorÂ
Moutkar Fawehinmi and 11 fromÂ
Antwon Townsend. JuniorÂ
Onyie Onunaku was held to just nine points of 3 of 6 performance from the field, but he had a game-high 14 rebounds.
Shenandoah scored the first 15 points of the game as St. Mary's missed its first 14 shots from the field. The Seahawks didn't score their first points until TJ Jordan nailed a three-pointer at the 11:45 mark of the first. SMC shot 9 for 37 (24.3 percent) from the field in the first 20 minutes, including just 1 for 14 (7.1 percent) from behind the arc.
Although SMC kept the game relatively close after giving up those first 15 points, the Hornets never led the lead fall below 12 points after initially taking that lead on a Lawrence bucket at the 13:04 mark.
The Seahawks cut the lead to 12 on a Preston Valdez jumper 1:12 into the second, but an Onunaku putback 1:15 later kept the hosts margin from dropping below 13 points the rest of the way.
Tyson Lesesne had 23 and Preston 10 for the visitors.
