St. Mary's Stops Women

WINCHESTER, Va. – St. Mary's of Maryland exacted a measure of revenge Sunday afternoon against homestanding Shenandoah, defeating the Hornets 53-50 in non-conference women's basketball action.

Shenandoah (2-5) opened 2005 with an overtime win over the Lady Seahawks (4-6) in St. Mary's City last season, but St. Mary's returned the favor in the Hornets final contest of the calendar year.

SU had every chance to win the game as they held a 13-point lead following junior Dee Fisher's jumper in the paint with 13:07 remaining. Unfortunately, this would be the host's high water mark.

The Seahawks preceded to go on an 18-5 run over the next 12:22 to tie the contest at 50-50 on the second of two Taylor Yearwood free throws with 45 seconds remaining.

Fisher missed a jumped on the Hornets next possession, and Kiely Murphy converted a fast break layup with 17 seconds left for the game-winning points.

The hosts had one more chance as Joia Davis took a three-pointer with five ticks showing, but her shot was off and Amanda Bullute pulled down the rebound for St. Mary's. She completed the day's scoring by hitting one of two free throws as she was fouled on the rebound.

Fisher led SU with 10 points while Murphy had a game-high 12. Allie Scott also had a game-high 12 rebounds for the visitors.

Box Score/Play by Play

Shenandoah is off for the Christmas holiday until January 7-8 when they travel to Washington, Pa. to play in the Washington and Jefferson Tournament. The Hornets face NJ City in the first round of the tourney and either host W&J; or Trinity (D.C.) in the consolation/championship round.
