DANVILLE, Va. - Averett University held visiting Shenandoah to just eight second half field goals on its way to a 70-61 USA South Conference women's basketball victory Sunday afternoon at the Grant Center.
Shenandoah (5-16, 2-10 USA South) took a 36-35 lead into the halftime lockeroom, but Averett (9-12, 5-7 USA South) turned up the defensive pressure in the second.
SU shot just 8 for 28 (28.6 percent) from the field following the break after shooting 12 for 29 (41.4 percent) in the first. The Lady Cougars, who shot slightly better in the second (36.7 percent versus 35.3 percent) took the lead for good on a Jetarwa Miles jumper with 8:01 to play.
The two teams traded the lead seven times and were tied on five others to this point, but a 13-1 AU run started by Miles' bucket sealed the Hornets fate.
Shenandoah answered this run with an 8-0 spurt of its own, but could get no closer than four points the rest of the way.
Hanna Taylor led the hosts with a game highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds while Dawn Sheets had 11 points and Tiffany DeLoatch 10.
Alicia Sanders had 14 andÂ
Netagia Foreman andÂ
Joia Davis 12 each for SU.
