WINCHESTER, Va. - Lynchburg College banged out 18 hits Sunday afternoon to defeating homestanding Shenandoah University 14-6 in non-league baseball action.
Lynchburg (3-2) broke open a tie game with five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Centerfielder Steven Scott provided the big blow in the frame; he took freshmanÂ
Taylor DuFrene deep over the Bridgeforth Field scoreboard to give his club an 8-5 lead.
It was Scott's second dinger of the afternoon; he made the score 4-0 Lynchburg in the top of the first when he hit a three-run home run to left off of SU starterÂ
Keith Fritz .
Shenandoah (1-2) bailed Fritz out in the bottom of the frame by scoring five runs on four hits as they sent 11 men to the plate. SU sophomoreÂ
Adam Duckett, who transferred from Lynchburg for the fall 2004 semester, drove in two runs with a double to left center.
Up 10-5, LC pulled away with a four-run eighth. SU scored a single run in its last at-bat when freshman pinch hitter Wes Fry drove in classmate Adam Kessel, but it was too little, too late.
Matt Goucker got the victory by pitching eight innings in relief of LC starter John Hines. Goucker scattered 10 hits and struck out 10 against just one walk to earn his first win of the season.
DuFrene was charged with the loss; he gave up five runs on five hits and two walks in 1/3 of an inning.
FreshmanÂ
Bobby Collier led the Shenandoah attack with a 3 for 5 afternoon while sophomoreÂ
David Jenkins was 2 for 5 with an RBI.
