GREENSBORO, N.C. - Top seeded Greensboro College held No. 8 Shenandoah University without a field goal over the last 5:01 of the USA South Conference Tournament quarterfinal round game Tuesday night and escaped with a 63-59 victory.
Greensboro (19-6) now advances to the tournament semi-finals where it will face No. 6 Methodist College on Friday in Newport News. MC upset third seeded Christopher Newport 60-51 Tuesday night.
Shenandoah completes its season with a 7-18 record. The Hornets were trying to become the first No. 8 seed to defeat a No. 1 at the conference tourney.
SU led 56-43 with 6:09 remaining afterÂ
Cassie Womack canned a jumper in the lane only to see GC reel off 15 of the game's next 17 points to tie it at 58-58 with 4:17 left.
Unfortunately for the Hornets, the Lady Pride continued their scoring run. Greensboro tacked on another four points before juniorÂ
Joia Davisscored what would prove to be her team's final point of the season on a free throw with 1:29 remaining. Davis then missed the second of her two free throws and a jumper at the 48 second mark that could have brought coach Kathy Orsini's team to within one, and GC got one of two free throws from DaVenna Brown 24 seconds after Davis' miss that clinched the victory.
FreshmanÂ
Netagia Foreman, who was selected as the conference rookie of the week for a league best fourth time earlier in the day, led Shenandoah with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Womack also had a double-double with 11 points and 16 boards.
Kim Enoch had 26 points and 18 rebounds for the hosts.
