DANVILLE, Va. - Shenandoah University failed to produce the first USA South Conference baseball sweep of the
Kevin Anderson era Sunday as host Averett took a 10-2 victory.
Shenandoah (4-3, 2-1 USA South) was seeking both its first ever three-game USA South series sweep and the 175th career win for Anderson. Unfortunately, Averett (4-7, 1-2 USA South) had other plans.
The Cougars touched SU starterÂ
Keith Fritz for six runs (five earned) on eight hits before chasing him with two outs in the sixth. Leading 3-2 heading into the frame, Averett mounted a two-out rally that included three doubles, a hit batsman and a wild pitch. The rally finally ended when freshmanÂ
Drew Dobbins came on and retired Matthew Graves on a groundout back to the mound.
The Cougars Justin Johnson held the Hornets to just five hits, all of which came in the first three innings. Shenandoah scored all of its runs in the third; sophomoresÂ
Daniel Ziccardy andÂ
Daniel Bowers each had hits with Bowers double down the right field line scoring Ziccardy.
Johnson struck out 10 against five hits and the two runs in earning the complete game victory. He is now 1-0. Fritz falls to 0-1 with the loss.
Box Score/Play by PlayÂ
Shenandoah is back in action Tuesday afternoon with a non-league doubleheader against Pitt-Bradford.
