Women Run Out of Gas Against Chowan

WINCHESTER, Va. - Chowan College took advantage of a poor shooting night from the foul line by the Shenandoah University Hornets to sneak out an 80-74 non-conference women's basketball victory Wednesday night.

Shenandoah (5-14) got 31 points from sophomore Alicia Sanders, but a season low 4 for 14 performance from the charity stripe spelled doom against former USA South Conference foe Chowan (16-6).

SU trailed just 41-40 at the half as coach Kathy Orsini's club shot an even 50 percent (18 for 36) from the field in the first 20 minutes. Sanders led all scorers in the period with 17 points while freshman Netagia Foreman added 10 with three assists.

The two teams traded the lead on three different occasions and were tied once; the Lady Braves had an 11-point lead one time and SU was up by eight three different times.

Although the game was close throughout the second, Chowan held the from the 17:45 mark on after Keyon Sellers nailed a layup in the paint.

CC would extend this lead to double digits by the 14:57 mark, but a 10-1 Shenandoah run over the next 3:05 brought the hosts to within one at 56-55. Unfortunately for the Shingleton Gymnasium crowd, this was as close as the hosts would get the rest of the evening.

The Hornets last, best chance came with just under three minutes left and Chowan holding a 73-70 advantage. Shenandoah got the ball back, but Foreman missed her three-point attempt and after Sellers hit one of two free throws at the 2:20 mark, the Lady Braves held at least a four-point lead the rest of the way.

In addition to Sanders' 31, Foreman had 14 and Cassie Womack 13 to go along with a game-high 16 rebounds.

Sellers led four CC players in double figures with 23; she also had 13 rebounds.
