WINCHESTER, Va. - Freshmen led the way Thursday afternoon as the Shenandoah University baseball team swept visiting Dickinson College, 11-0 and 4-2, in non-league baseball action.
SU (7-5) got pitching victories from freshmenÂ
Jason Byrne in game one andÂ
Taylor DuFrene in the nightcap; DuFrene's bid for his first collegiate victory was made much easier when classmateÂ
Jason Eberz gave the Hornets an all-important insurance run with a sixth inning home run in game two.
Game one was over nearly before it started - Shenandoah sent 13 men to the plate and scored eight runs on seven hits to provide Byrne with all the offense he would need.
However, Byrne (2-0) didn't need the support. The freshman gave up just three hits while striking out four and walking none in the five-inning complete game performance. This contest was halted after five innings due to the NCAA 10-run rule.
SophomoreÂ
Daniel Ziccardy and freshmanÂ
Adam Kessel each drove in three runs against the Red Devils (0-2). Ziccardy was 2 for 2 with a run scored in addition to his three RBI; he had both of his hits in the eight-run first. His second hit, a double to right center, cleared the bases and gave SU the 8-0 advantage.
Eight of nine starters had hits in the game with Ziccardy,Â
Daniel Bowers, and freshmanÂ
Preston Tarleton all getting two.
The second game was much closer, but the Hornets erased an early 1-0 DC lead by pushing across two runs on one hit and two Dickinson errors in the third. The big play came with runners on second and third and one out -Â
Drew Crawford grounded to first and as DC first baseman Luke Volker threw home in an attempt to cut downÂ
Joe Harpine, the throw got away while allowed both Harpine andÂ
Matt Fauver to score.
JuniorÂ
Nick Sborz worked a perfect seventh to earn his school record fourth save of the spring. DuFrene evened his record at 1-1 with the win.
