LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Shenandoah University scored the final four goals of the first half and three of the final four goals in the second to post a 13-11 women's lacrosse victory over Washington (Md.) College Thursday morning at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex.
Shenandoah (2-1) trailed the Shorewomen (1-2) 4-1 with 18 minutes left in the first half and 7-5 with 5:28 remaining, but scored four straight goals to take a 9-7 halftime lead.
Sophomore
Erika Bradd got things started when she scored two goals in a 12-second span. At the 5:15 mark, she got an unassisted tally. SU won the ensuing draw and
Melissa Bryant fed Bradd for the tying goal just 12 ticks after her first goal.
Attack wing
Lauren Carpinello gave the Hornets an 8-7 lead with a goal off a Bradd assist with 2:16 left before
Jenn Iuliano scored on a free position with 1:29 remaining to push the lead to 9-7.
WAC responded in the second half by opening the period with a 3-1 run;
Kelly Matagiese broke up this spurt with an unassisted goal at the 18:04 mark.
With the score knotted at 10-10, Shenandoah responded with three unanswered goals. Matagiese tallied at the 11:58 and 8:22 marks, the first on a free position, to give SU a lead it would not relinquish. The final Hornets goal came from freshman
Nikki Leonard, her first in college, to make it 13-10 with 5:31 remaining.
Bradd led all scorers with four goals and two assists while Matagiese netted four goals of her own. Bryant tallied a goal and an assist, while Leonard, Carpinello, Iuliano, and
Lauren Prentice each tallied once.
Wendy Taylor and
Jessica Young split time in goal; Taylor had four saves in the first half before Young contributed two saves in the final 30 minutes of play.
