WINCHESTER, Va. - The SU baseball team rebounded in game two Saturday afternoon to salvage a split of its USA South Conference doubleheader with visiting NC Wesleyan.
After Wesleyan (12-10, 3-5 USA South) took game one 2-1, Shenandoah (8-6, 4-4 USA South) came back to win 6-5 in the nightcap.
The Hornets got just a combined nine hits in the double dip; Rice Blake picked up the game one victory for the Bishops by allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out five in the complete game triumph.
NCWC got one run in the first and another in the third to hand SU sophomoreÂ
Jason Burgess his first loss of the season. Burgess, who also went the distance, fell to 3-1 on the season as he scattered eight hits in the seven innings of work.
The lone bright spot offensive in game one for the hosts came from junior centerfielderÂ
Scott Disch . Disch hit his first collegiate home run, an inside-the-park job, with two out in the fifth inning. Disch hit a screamer down the rightfield line that Ray'Mon Bizzell was unable to come up with on a dive and then Disch raced all the way around for the home run.
Game two was a see-saw affair with the two teams trading the lead one time and being tied two others before Shenandoah finally took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. SophomoreÂ
Daniel Bowers drove in the first run of the frame with a double that scoredÂ
Bobby Anthony and then scored the winning run one batter later as Disch had an RBI single to right.
JuniorÂ
Nick Sborz struck out the final two batters of the game to earn his fifth save of the spring.
Sborz' performance made a first time winner out of freshmanÂ
Drew Dobbins; Dobbins came on the fifth inning for starterÂ
Keith Fritz and struck out four in 2.2 innings of action.
Brian James took the loss for Wesleyan. He gave up one run on two hits in 1/3 of an inning. James came on for starter John Hayman one batter into the sixth.
