WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University held the early lead Sunday afternoon in its rubber match with visiting NC Wesleyan, but the Bishops rallied for a 5-2 USA South Conference victory.
SU (8-7, 4-5 USA South) scored single runs in the first and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead over NCWC (13-10, 4-5 USA South), but the Bishops eventually got to Hornets starterÂ
Gerry Sasse.
Sasse fell to 1-3 on the season after giving up three runs on seven hits and three walks in 7.1 innings. He left with runners on first and second and one out in the Bishops eighth.
AfterÂ
Drew Dobbins issued a walk Brian Massey to load the bases, Shenandoah skipper
Kevin Anderson turned to closerÂ
Nick Sborz to attempt to snuff out the rally. Sborz induced a groundball back to himself against Ryan Synder, but attempted to turn a double play second to first rather than going home with the ball. Synder beat the throw over to first, driving in pinch runner Chris Pecora in the process.
The Bishops reached Sborz for two insurance runs in the top of the ninth before reliever Scott Faison put the final nail in the Hornets coffin with a scoreless bottom of the frame. Faison was perfect in his two innings of relief.
Shenandoah got its two runs by combining three hits and a wild pitch in the first and one hit, a walk and a wild pitch in the fourth. JuniorÂ
Scott Disch drove in what proved to be the Hornets final run of the afternoon with a one-out single through the right side. He, along withÂ
Daniel Ziccardy andÂ
Adam Duckett, all had two hits on the day for the hosts.
