GREENSBORO, N.C. - Shenandoah University combined a strong hitting performance with a solid outing by junior
Gerry Sasse to come back and defeat Greensboro College 9-5 in the second game of the two teams USA South Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Greensboro (16-8, 6-2 USA South) was a 2-1 winner over Shenandoah (12-8, 5-6 USA South) in game one.
SU was held to just five hits in the game loss, making a hard-luck loser of sophomore
Jason Burgess. Burgess gave up just two runs (one earned) on eight hits and two walks in six innings, but the Pride made the offense stand up. Burgess is now 3-2 on the season.
Sasse also gave up eight hits in game two, but the Hornets countered Greensboro's five runs with nine of their own to send the Pride down in league play for just the second time this season.
Trailing 4-2 heading into the fifth, Shenandoah broke open the contest with five runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Freshman
Bobby Anthony provided the big blow when he made his first ever collegiate home run a special one - he hit a two-out grand slam to give his club a 7-4 lead.
Anthony finished the day 3 for 5 with the four runs batted in while
Daniel Ziccardy,
David Jenkins and
Sam Fullerton all had two hits.
Adam Duckett had just one hit in five at-bats, but he knocked in three runs, including the first run in the pivotal fifth inning.
