LEXINGTON, Va. - Washington & Lee University outlasted visiting Shenandoah University Tuesday afternoon in the longest game of the
Kevin Anderson era, winning 8-7 in 13 innings.
W&L; (20-4) ended the better than three-hour contest by pushing across the winning run on a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a single in the bottom of the 13th off juniorÂ
Nick Sborz (0-1).
Shenandoah (13-9) had tied the game at 6-6 after combining three hits with a Generals error in the fifth inning to score three runs.Â
Daniel Ziccardy andÂ
Adam Duckett each drove in runs for Anderson's club in the frame; Ziccardy platedÂ
Scott Disch with a sacrifice fly while Duckett drove inÂ
David Jenkins on a double to leftfield.
After the two teams traded single runs in the sixth, neither team was able to push across the go-ahead run in the next six innings. SU had five runners advance to scoring position during this time, including one each in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
In the ninth, Ziccardy walked with two outs and eventually advanced to third, where he was cut down at the plate attempting to score on Duckett's single.
Sborz took the loss despite giving up just the one run on three hits and two walks in five innings of relief. He was one of three SU pitchers to see action Tuesday afternoon.
