WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University missed an excellent chance for a Saturday sweep after winning game one, but the Christopher Newport University baseball team came back to salvage a split with a game two victory.

SU (14-11, 7-8 USA South) was an 11-3 winner in the lidlifter before the Captains (18-11, 7-5 USA South) won the rubber match of the three-game series with a 6-4 victory in the nightcap.

The Hornets banged out 10 hits in getting the game one win; SU sent 10 men to the plate in the first to take a 6-0 lead.

After CNU got back into the game with a three-run fourth, Shenandoah answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame to maintain the six-run cushion. Sophomore David Jenkins provided the big hit in the inning with a three-run home run to left off of Captains starter Brian Coffey (0-3).

Jenkins finished the game 3 for 4 with the three RBI while Adam Duckettand Daniel Ziccardy each had two hits.

Junior Gerry Sasse was the beneficiary of the offensive production; he improved to 3-3 on the spring after giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks in the complete game outing. He also struck out six.

Christopher Newport got two runs in the top of the first inning against Hornets game two starter Keith Fritz (2-3) to take a lead it would not relinquish.

Shenandoah had its best chance to take a lead when Jenkins came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but CNU starter Eben Brower (3-3) preserved the two-run lead by striking Jenkins out swinging.

Ricky Medina led the Captains offense with 4 for 4 outing that included a home run while DH Brad Melton hit a home run for the third consecutive game. Ziccardy, Duckett and Daniel Bowers had two hits each for the hosts.
