FERRUM, Va. - The Shenandoah University baseball team got coach
Kevin Anderson his 175th career collegiate coaching victory Monday afternoon in a 5-4 game one victory at USA South Conference rival Ferrum College. Unfortunately, the Panthers came back to take game two 7-0.
Anderson is now 175-112-1 in a combined five plus seasons at James Madison University and Shenandoah.
SU (5-5, 3-3 USA South) got the game one victory as sophomore
Jason Burgess improved to 3-0 on the season by scattering four hits in 5.1 innings of work. He gave up three runs while walking two and also striking out two.
After freshman
Drew Dobbins got Burgess out of two on, one out jam in the sixth, junior
Nick Sborz picked up his third save of the spring after giving up one run in the bottom of the seventh. Sborz ended the game by inducing Ferrum third baseman Brett Thomas to hit into a bases loaded 6-4-3 double play.
The Hornets got the winning runs by pushing across three in the top of the fifth on four hits. Sophomore
Daniel Bowers led off with a single to right and moved to second on a balk. After Bowers moved to third on
Preston Tarleton's single to left and
Matt Fauver struck out,
Scott Disch plated Bowers with a single to left.
Daniel Ziccardy sacrificed Tarleton home and Disch to third before Disch came home on
David Jenkins single to center. Jenkins led the 10-hit attack with a 3 for 4 afternoon that included what proved to be the game winning RBI.
SU had seven hits in the second contest, but was shut out for the first time this season as four FC pitchers combined to win the series rubber match.
Freshman
Drew Crawford was 2 for 4 for the Hornets in his first start of the spring.

Anderson also announced that the Hornets game with
Dickinson, scheduled for Tuesday at 3:00, will be moved to
Thursday at 3:00. The Hornets next game is now Wednesday at 3:00 against Gettysburg.
